RT Booklovers Convention

RT #17 was held in Atlanta this past May and I have to tell you, it was an amazing experience. I met readers, bloggers, and did my fair share of fangirling when meeting some of my favorite authors. By the end of the first night, I discovered why everyone recommended wearing comfortable shoes. The events/sessions start early in the morning and doesn’t end until well after midnight.

For anyone who has the opportunity to go, I cannot express how much I encourage you to do so. It’s an experience I will never forget. Participating in my first ever book signing, author events, and introducing my novels to new readers still has my heart smiling. I simply cannot wait for RT#18 which will be in Reno next May.

My latest novel, Chasing Wicked – The Mitchell Brothers – Wicked Series, Book 1 came out a week prior to the event…just in time to introduce my bad boy Stone Mitchell. I’m planning to have Garrett’s story, Finding Wicked out by the end of the year and following will be Chad’s in Keeping Wicked.

Anyone interested in attending RT, here’s the link where you can keep up to date on any hot topics for planning early.

Creating a Novel…This is the way I roll…

Do you ever wonder where an author creates, imagines, and unfolds the story that has to be told? Like a few of my author friends, I find myself jotting down notes on just about anything on hand. Even using grocery or restaurant receipts if I’ve changed purses and forgot to toss in my trusty notebook. Without pen and paper, I’ll never keep remember the one line that’s a must for my story.
A vast majority of my writing has been spent in the comfort of my oversized recliner. And thank goodness it’s big because I share the space with my precious apricot poodle named Macy. She happens to think she shares the space with me instead of the other way around. I couldn’t resist sharing her usual spot with her head sprawled out on my keyboard.

Other favorite places to write include, my bed (especially in the mornings) or enjoying beautiful cool temperatures on the patio. Too many hours to count are spent at the dining room table with dozens of hummingbirds swarming the feeder. There’s something about those beautiful birds that help me relax so I can get through the pits of hell AKA writers block. (Notice the Sonic drink….keep reading and you’ll see they are everywhere!)

…And for those moments the story takes off in my mind and I’m all to thankful when I’ve harbored my laptop deep inside a too-big of a purse while sitting at places such as Sonic. (Don’t judge me, LOL!) Several of the best scenes I’ve written came from sipping a Route 44 Coke Zero in the middle of cars zipping all around 🙂
And then there’s the junk food that help make it happen, LOL!!!
stress-writing
For the most part creating characters, plots, and scenes are fun and exciting…but it can also be a pull your hair out/bang your head against the wall journey. Along the way of writing, editing, and re-writing, I found I needed a place to be serious. Where I can shut out the world, and focus with a do-not-disturb sign on hand. With the house still filled with kids, I didn’t have a room to spare to call mine. However I did have a place! Several years ago, we purchased an inexpensive armoire from Wal-Mart and placed it in our foyer for an old desktop. There’s a partial dividing wall separating the area from the living area. Since no one ever uses this space anymore, I decided to stake claim and call in my own. With a few small purchases to brand it the way I wanted, I now have my own writing cave. Yes, it’s tiny…but it’s mine! And I adore it.

There’s a ton of dreamy writing spaces on Pinterest and I have some on my boards. Browse over and enjoy 🙂
And for Kathryn L. James, this is a sneak peek at how it’s done!
Happy reading and writing!
Until next time,
Kathryn L James (KJ)
Kathryn James lives in a southern small town with her husband and kids. Being a hopeless romantic, she loves to read and write about bad-boy sexy alpha males and a strong heroine. She weaves her characters along a roller coaster ride full of angst before they reach their HEA. The beach is one of her favorite places to relax and write. But most days, when she’s writing, you can find her snuggled under a blanket in a recliner with her sweet apricot poodle curled up beside her. She’s loves diet coke, and is certain it helped her stay awake pecking away on her laptop writing her debut novel Crazy Beautiful Lies and a short Crazy Beautiful Kiss in an anthology Story of a Kiss. She’s currently working on a wicked hot novel, Chasing Wicked.

All About Emotion by Kathryn L. James

Have you ever read a book that stayed with you? One that you could read several times over, and come back and re-read the entire book? Or just maybe certain scenes over and over again? There are some books either on my shelf in paperback/hardcover, Kindle, or Nook that pulled me deep inside them. Continue reading

Imagination Play Time by Kathryn L. James

Plot or Pansters? I wrote Crazy Beautiful Lies, a full-length novel, and Crazy Beautiful Kiss, a short in the anthology, Story of a Kiss, entirely by the seat of my pants. I didn’t know where they were going from chapter to chapter…not even scene to scene. But I did it, and in the end, I was over the top happy with the results! Continue reading

Getting Organized By Kathryn L. James

Getting organized.

cbl-1st-revision.jpg

Writing my second novel has proved to be just as hard as writing my first. It’s been five months since publishing and I wrote it entirely panster style. This go around, I’m learning the art of organization and creating story board plotting. Hanging out in writer circles, I found a few of my writing friends use story boards to get their plot, characters, and development off and running. Continue reading

Is Writing Easy? By Kathryn L. James

I’ve been asked, “Does writing come easy for you?” My answer is easy. Hell no.

Maybe it’s my writing style of being a panster that makes it challenging. If you aren’t familiar with the term panster, it means fly by the seat of your pants and write what comes to mind without a plan of where the story is going to go. I’ve tried to plot out an outline and it just didn’t work for me. Another habit that surely slows me down is how I write and edit at the same time. After each paragraph, I tend to stop and re-read my work. Sometimes I simply change a word or two, or I may delete the entire thing and start over. Getting a chapter just right takes takes more than several attempts before I’m satisfied. At this point I’m only in phase one of my writing process. Continue reading

A Million Butterflies by Kathryn L. James

Life in my neck of the woods has been hectic in the most exciting way. Many followed my journey from the beginning, cheering and supporting me along the way. On December 14th, I published my very first novel, Crazy Beautiful Lies. All of my hard work was set free for the world to read.

While I may have listened to others who have already experienced this roller coaster ride, I never dreamed the different emotions I would feel. The night before release day, I couldn’t sleep. Each time I closed my eyes and drifted off, the peace only lasted minutes. I stared into the darkness worrying if readers would buy a book from little ‘ole me, a writer from a small southern town.

I chose InkSlinger for my release day launch, cover reveal, and they lined up blogs to review and share the word. (They’ve been amazing, by the way.) On the morning of, I can’t even begin to express how I felt the moment I saw the cover pop up on facebook, twitter, and blogs. And then, there was my first review on Goodreads and Amazon…FIVE AMAZING STARS, and the great reviews kept coming. I giggled like a young school girl when I received my first message from a fan. An overwhelming amount of happiness, giddiness, and joy filled my heart. Tonight as I write this, I’m still in awe.

February 1, 2016, the same million butterflies that have been fluttering around in my stomach for the last two weeks will be back. Crazy Beautiful Kiss, my second official published work will be birthed in A Story of a Kiss, an anthology. Thirteen authors with thirteen amazing stories that will make you smile as you read about toe curling kisses.

SOAK Teaser 2

With each publication, I would like to think the nerve-racking anxiousness, heart palpitations, and stress will get easier, but for me I don’t think it ever will. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I LOVE the million butterflies!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my insight on what it’s been like going from a writer/author to a happy published author.

Until next time,

Kathryn L. James

***WARNING***ADULT CONTENT

The cab pulled into the circular drive, parking beside a shiny black sports car that screamed expensive. I sat in awe gazing at Colin’s home. The place resembled a freakin’ paradise, sitting in the middle of its own rainforest. Private and amazing. In the center of the pebbled drive, a beautiful tranquil fountain, larger than my living room encompassed soothing sounds to the eye and ear.

Loud music filled the air coming from inside the front door. I knocked twice and after no one answered, I realized coming unannounced wasn’t the brightest idea I’d ever had. I should have considered he might be entertaining since he’s one of the best attorneys in the country.

The taxi long gone, I stood in the October salty cool air, under wooden beams of the tuscan entrance. The enormous rich mahogany doors were huge compared to my five foot three small frame. A gentle breeze sailed across my skin and I inhaled the pleasant fragrant tropical flowers that lined a trellis above my head.

I fumbled around in my purse for my cell phone to call a cab. I’d decided to call him in the morning. I knew if at all possible, he’d make time to see me before I flew home tomorrow. Just when my fingers circled the device, the heavy door opened.

Holy. Hell. Hotness.

I had no clue who stood in front of me, and forgot about Colin. Frozen in place, and mesmerized, I took him in. . . every delicious detail. Standing at least six four, with light tanned skin, and emerald green eyes defined every girls dream. My insides burned like hot lava poured through them. Trying to swallow, I only gulped.

Everything about him spelled intense.

No shirt. . .day-um! What a six pack, maybe eight or twelve.

I scanned my eyes over his chest and rippled abdomen, down to the top of his jeans… and there it was, his perfect V. My gaze landed at the top of his jeans, top button still undone. With every heartbeat, my blood pulsed burning fire, sending tingles between my legs. I’d never been so turned on at first sight of someone.

I finally thought of Colin, but still couldn’t speak. I looked around his thick muscled corded arm searching for any sight of my friend. A minty smell mixed with cologne grab my attention back to him. This man could be on the cover of any men’s fitness magazine.

He leaned into the door frame folding his arms across his chest. Green eyes sparkled at me with amusement as I stared, and my skin flushed three shades of red. He cocked his eyebrow up and his lips curved into a delicious lazy smile. I took in his strong chiseled jaw and his messy damp jet black hair.

Probably just out of the shower. Him naked. . .just damn.

“You’re late, and I don’t like waiting.” He moved aside for me to enter.

Late? Kept him waiting? I tried to snap out out of my mesmerized stupor.

“Honey, come in. I don’t bite. Unless you’re into that.” He dragged his hand through his hair. The song changed and the tune was slow and sexy.

Like the fly drawn to the spider web, I stepped inside.

Finding my wits, I managed to ask, “Is Colin here?”

“No threesome tonight honey. Just me and you. The money’s on the bar in an envelope. Once we’re done you can see yourself out. I only want to fuck. I don’t want to get personal. This is just a fuck. Understand?”

Money?. . .Only want to fuck. . .just a fuck. . .He thinks I’m a hooker!

I gazed around the room and stared at the thick white envelope on the bar. So thick, I wondered just how much he was paying.

“It’s all there.” His voice cocky.

I held back a laugh and smiled. A no strings, carefree, reckless night was exactly what I wanted. What I needed.

Let the games begin. . .because, I’m all in!

If I had to name a song, describing how I feel. . .this is it!

Hope you enjoyed my snippets!  Until next time,

Kathryn James (KJ)
