I — somewhat — recently rearranged my house. My dining room and office, to be specific. We have a very open floor plan in my house, and quite frankly, I hate it. But I love my cozy little cubby hole in the house. There’s no door, but I’m still isolated from the rest of the house without hiding in my bathroom.
I’ve stocked my office with my favorite things — dragons and legos and Loki and Sherlock, and 20 chapsticks (I counted. #21 is on my headboard), my PS2, calendars I forget to use, every Sharpie color imaginable, adult coloring books, Bulbasaur, and, every other week, my bestie.
There’s also a giant mug that says, “this coffee is making me awesome”. It lies. I was already awesome. It’s also full of pistachio shells because that’s just where they go.
We’ll leave the tin of assorted candies out of this — it doesn’t exist. Same with the drawer of Hershey’s dark chocolate kisses. The box of Cards Against Humanity cards does exist.
But one of my favorite features is my chair. I have an old rug hanging over it, with a heating pad duct taped to the rug. The cord goes up and over the top, then down to the arm, where’s it’s, again, duct taped, to the under-side of the arm, then snakes across the floor, and up to the power strip. I have an old beach towel over the heating pad. But this is bar none, my favorite place to write. It would be an even more distant first place if I had an office with a door.
Doors aside, I’ve fallen asleep in this chair. I’ve done some massive writing sessions in it. I’ve stared blankly at the blank page. I’ve even pondered my very existence as an author in it.
It’s super comfy. I put my feet up on the footstool under my desk, lean back, give the controller two clicks (I like medium temp on the heating pad) and fall asleep instead of writing. Especially when I add my favorite blankie to the mix. And my slipper socks (of which I have 2 pair). Manna from heaven!
I know it sounds silly, but I really do love my chair. I mean, really, I love the entire set-up. But the chair…
What’s in your office? What do you love most about your writing space?
An eclectic writer, Milli Gilbert is a stay-at-home mom who loves to play with words almost as much as she loves to play with her kids. All of her stories involve romance, and maybe a little bit of mystery. Milli loves to write about cowboys and shifters. And smut. Don’t forget the smut. And can usually be found trying to find interesting ways to combine them. She has several short stories published, and hopes to have her first full length novel out in late Summer 2017. She just took off after one of her couples to follow them around for a few months – but don’t worry, she’ll be back. If not, you can find her on Facebook, and Pinterest, or follow her on Twitter.
And of course, her very own blog, Hairballs of Genius.
